Burning the Future – Coal in America (89 minutes)
Over half of America’s electricity is produced in coal-fired plants, much of which comes from West Virginia where mountain top removal mining has obliterated 1.4 million acres of mountains and polluted the groundwater. The daughter of a miner, Maria is the emotional backbone of the movie. And as she stands in the middle of Times Square yelling, “Turn off the lights!” it’s tough not to think of our role as consumers.
The Environmental Education Fund, the Library, and Sustainable Highland Park are sponsoring the Highland Park Green Roots Environmental Film Festival, a two week event of screenings and discussions.
