Berlin counterfeiter Salomon Sorowitsch was arrested in 1939 and eventually ended up in Mauthousen Concentration Camp near Linz. Put to work by the Nazis, he successfully figured out how to counterfeit the British pound.
An exhibit of his counterfeit work will be on display through June at the Highland Park Public Library, 31 North Fifth Avenue, in the Main Hall Display Case. The bills are from the collection of Anthony Barile. Although he did begin producing bills for the Nazis, his conscience prevented him from printing the US dollar, a feat he was professionally proud of, and his exploits have recently been portrayed in the 2007 German film The Counterfeiters.
