Join the Adult Services Department to discuss Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi as part of the NEA Big Read program! Highland Park Public Library will hold two book discussions – one on a Monday evening and one on a Thursday afternoon. Please join us for whichever discussion fits your schedule.

In 18th-century Ghana, two half-sisters are born into different villages, each unaware of the other. One will marry an Englishman and lead a life of comfort in the palatial rooms of the Cape Coast Castle. The other will be captured in a raid on her village, imprisoned in the very same castle, and sold into slavery.
Homegoing follows the parallel paths of these sisters and their descendants through eight generations: from the Gold Coast to the plantations of Mississippi, from the American Civil War to Jazz Age Harlem. This extraordinary novel illuminates slavery’s troubled legacy both for those who were taken and those who stayed—and shows how the memory of captivity has been inscribed on the soul of our nation. It’s perfect for readers who enjoyed Pachinko, Middlesex, or Toni Morrison’s books.
This program is appropriate for adults and older teens who are ready to discuss mature topics and themes.
Registration is not required, but if you register for 3 reading or writing events, you can receive a free copy of the book, while supplies last. (Register here: https://raicesculturalcenter.org/bigread)
