Poet Maxine Susman will conduct a poetry writing workshop via Zoom, Our Year So Far. Participants will discuss a provocative sample poem or two, join in some group brain-storming, and start the draft of a new poem, with time at the end to share their work. Maxine Susman was born and raised in New York before moving to New Jersey in her 20s. She lived in Highland Park for many years, and raised her daughter and son here. Now she lives in nearby Kingston. She retired some years back from Caldwell University, where she was an English professor. Since then she has been giving poetry classes, and teaching an ongoing poetry workshop at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of Rutgers University.

Virtual Poetry Night Series Kickoff

Tonight Maxine Susman will read from My Mother’s Medicine, her seventh and most recent, a poetry-memoir about her mother Florence Carol Levin, a young Jewish girl from Brooklyn who went to the last all-women’s medical school in the 1930’s. She will also read some recent poems from the past pandemic year. Maxine Susman was born and raised in New York before moving to New Jersey in her 20s. She lived in Highland Park for many years, and raised her daughter and son here. Now she lives in nearby Kingston. She retired some years back from Caldwell University, where she was an English professor. Since then she has been giving poetry classes, and teaching an ongoing poetry workshop at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of Rutgers University. Her work appears in many journals, including Paterson Literary Review, Fourth River, Slant, Journal of New Jersey Poets, Presence, and Crab Orchard Review. She often writes about the natural world, health and illness, art, and animals, including people.

Climate change is wreaking havoc in the lives of rural farmers in Zimbabwe, often leading to poor or no harvests in back to back seasons. This talk, Sustainable Agriculture Projects in Zimbabwe, with Tait Chirenje, Professor of Environmental Science & Sustainability, Stockton University will focus on results from a four-year effort to help rural farmers transition from vulnerable large-scale field based agricultural practices like corn/soybean growing to small-scale controlled environment system like shed-grown mushroom and hydroponics. The talk will cover how the development of a demonstration center helped provide incentives for local farmers and international experiences for Dr. Chirenje’s university students. Why read plays during a Pandemic? All of us miss connecting with people and also going to live performances. Reading a play together via Zoom lessens that loss. For our third play reading, we will read the first half of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, one of his four history plays about Rome and also one of his most familiar tragedies.
